Why choose upholstery fabric in wool?

Herringdal

Do you have a new sofa that you need to choose fabric for or perhaps some old dining room chairs that need to be reupholstered? Choosing upholstery fabric can be overwhelming when you consider price, design, look and maintenance.

Wool is a naturally very durable product, but that doesn't mean you have to compromise on design if you choose wool. The varieties and color options available with wool are vast. Furniture textiles made from natural wool fibers are incredibly resilient and retain their shape even after being sat on for long periods. So sofas or chairs upholstered in wool fabric will, with proper maintenance, remain luxurious for many years.

A natural protective coating on the wool fibers helps prevent stains and its anti-static properties prevent dust from accumulating. The same properties also mean that there is no breeding ground for bacteria, and odors do not stick in the same way as in synthetic clothing. It is often necessary to ventilate the woolen textile well. Furniture upholsterers love to work with wool textiles because it is easy to pull and it does not crease.

Choosing wool textiles is a sustainable choice. It is biodegradable and when it is thrown away, it adds nutrients back to the soil as it breaks down.

Wool is biodegradable and a sustainable choice.

Here are 10 good reasons to choose wool upholstery:

1. Wool absorbs moisture.

It can absorb up to 30% moisture in relation to its own weight without feeling wet or clammy. This means that a piece of furniture or clothing made of wool will not create a clammy feeling in contrast to, for example, the equivalent in synthetic material.

2. Wool is self-cleaning and has antibacterial properties.

Wool garments should be aired between uses and do not need to be washed as often. Wool also prevents bad odours.

3. Wool is heat regulating.

It cools in summer and warms in winter. A woolen furniture fabric feels dry and comfortable to sit on.

4. Wool is 100% natural.

Wool is a protein fiber similar to human hair and grows naturally on the sheep.

5. Wool textiles are easy to clean and maintain.

It is naturally water resistant. This means that it is highly resistant to impurities. Addition of impregnating agents to wool is unnecessary in normal use.

6. Wool textiles are elastic and hold their shape well.

When the wool is stretched during use, it returns to its original shape afterwards. Wool provides robust, hard-wearing fabrics that make garments and furniture withstand hard use over a long period of time without appearing worn.

7. Wool attracts little dust.

Wool is a wet fiber and it is naturally anti-static. This means that it does not attract dust like other dry fiber types.

8. Wool textile is well suited for noise-absorbing materials.

This is due to the three-dimensional shape of the wool fibre. It has a spiral-shaped structure that retains air and thus provides both heat-insulating and noise-reducing properties.

9. Wool is naturally flame retardant.

It does not burn or melt - but chars. This means that we produce flame retardant textiles for normal use without the use of chemicals. This makes wool a safe choice in terms of possible fire.

10. Wool is a sustainable choice

Woolen textiles are made from natural fibers that are not harmful to the environment and are long-lasting products, and are therefore a more sustainable and long-term choice.
