Bardal’s Origin

Bardal was launched in 2017 due to demand from the domestic and home furnishing market for a new, high quality, soft and versatile upholstery fabric. The range of melange colours in the Bardal palette are inspired by nature and exude a warm and welcoming feeling as well as a timeless beauty. The designer, Merete Haabeth Serrano, is also the talent behind the amazing Heidal fabric which employs similar traditional weaving styles and simple elegance.

In 2020 Bardal was updated by Ragnhild Nordhagen and Christiane Müller with a new colour range of 29 colours. This update was a response to huge interest in this textile within the home furnishings industry and give options to suit a wide plethora of interiors.

Production and Construction

The tabby weave used in the construction of Bardal is strong & hardwearing and, thanks to the unique dying method used by GU, it is also soft and welcoming too. Bardal boasts a Martindale rub resistance rating of 65,000, which is very high for the home furnishing market and makes it suitable for use in the hospitality industry and commercial sector too.

Markets and Uses

The beautiful melange colours have been a rousing success in the home furnishings market and Bardal is being used to upholster Scandinavian design icons at Hjelle as well as the extremely comfortable chairs from Stressless. These chairs and sofas are lifetime purchases designed to be the focus of our living spaces, therefore Bardal makes the ideal pairing due to its timeless beauty which transcends short term fashions.

The strength and durability of Bardal has also made it attractive in the office and hospitality markets and has been used by leading office design companies like Kinnarps for comfortable office chairs and in waiting rooms.

Looking To The Future

Bardal, like all of GU’s upholstery fabrics, strives for ever greater levels of sustainability and environmental protection. GU has taken concrete steps to make ecologically progressive fabrics, including sourcing upwards of 60% of our wool from local farms here in Norway, minimising water and detergent use, reducing waste, and delivering textiles that can be reused or composted and returned to nature when their life cycle is complete.
